Puch Newport
The Maxi in its Sunday best
// The story
The Newport was Puch's dressed-up Maxi. Under the paint it was the same bike as a Maxi S, but it rolled out with hand-applied pinstriping, its own decals, reflective whitewall tires and sometimes a brown saddle.
Puch kept tweaking it. The Newport L traded the pinstripes for swoop decals and added a black transmission cover and a puffy saddle. An auto-start version came with oil injection, metallic paint and no clutch lever, and the Newport II got the two-speed ZA50.
Along with the Maxi, it was one of the Puchs you saw everywhere in the US in the late 70s and early 80s. Single-speed Newports run the same E50 as the Maxi, so every Maxi part and go-fast upgrade bolts right on.
