Tomos
Slovenia's moped workhorse

// The story
Tomos was founded in 1948 in Koper, in what's now Slovenia and was then Yugoslavia. It started building mopeds in 1954 under a license from Puch.
Tomos sold mopeds in the US from 1976 all the way to 2014, far longer than most brands. Models like the Sprint, Racing TT and Streetmate ran the A3 engine, and later bikes got the A35 in the 1990s. Tomos also built outboard motors and even assembled Citroën cars.
The company was privatized in 1998 and went bankrupt in January 2019. Plenty of Tomos bikes are still out there ripping.
