Peugeot launched the 103 in 1971, and it became the moped of France. More than 3 million were sold, making it the best-selling 50cc two-stroke in history. For decades it carried French teenagers to school and workers to the job.

It's a simple two-stroke with a reed-valve intake and a variator transmission. The swing arm pivots at the engine, so the chain doesn't get yanked around when the suspension moves.

There are a ton of versions: the sporty SP, SPX and RCX, the comfy MVL, liquid-cooled models and more. US 103s were split by speed class, from about 20 mph up to 40 mph, and a rigid-frame 103 was sold around Chicago.
